I am back with a new monster this week. However, rather than making some large monster whose primary offense would be physically-based, Mello here goes in the opposite direction. After all, if all the monsters one made were created the same way, one might start to stiffen in terms of design, would he not?
Mello is an angel that had landed in the world where some of these other monsters exist. She cannot risk the inhabitants seeing her as she truly is, lest they try to discover the secrets of her otherworldly magic. For this reason, Mello has decided to suppress her most powerful magical talents, and she transformed into this fairylike creature as a result. That said, though she has forbidden herself from using her true potential as an angel, she can still use her wand to evoke the powers of the magical runes she has recorded on various cards.
As I said before, designing Mello was meant to be a different process from designing something like Kangolf. I wanted to make a fairy monster of some kind. One major inspiration behind this creature's design was Mokona from various Clamp manga, a small creature that vaguely resembles a round rabbit that has great magical power. In this case, I did make Mello a rather round creature, though this one possesses more feline features.
The cards shown around her were drawn from a brief idea I had to make Mello (among other monsters) characters in a briefly-shown fictional card game. A person that wanted to play with Mello as the leader of their playstyle would not be able to use Mello's physical power to great effect. Therefore, that person would instead need to combine the powers of various runes through Mello's wand in order to deal significant damage. With the right combination of runes, however, spellcasting creatures could potentially devastate the opposing side more than just physically-based monsters. Mello could wipe out an army of dinosaurs, for example, by combining certain runes to create a bone-chilling blizzard.
Do not underestimate the cute ones. You never know if they might be forces of destruction. Right, Kirby?
