Kangolf Attacks!

Once again, I'm trying to draw some monsters.  This week, I have a draft of a rather bouncy beast I call the "Kangolf".

Kangaskhan is a Pokemon that resembles a giant kangaroo you might see in kaiju movies, and its Japanese name is "Garura".  There was also a monster from Digimon Adventure known as "Garuramon", only that monster resembled a giant wolf.  I figured that some kind of wolf-kangaroo hybrid could probably be a cool-looking monster, and I got to drawing this.

Although this monster does mainly resemble a wolf of some kind, I wanted to emphasize the kangaroo aspects of it as well.  This is the main reason why it wound up as a bipedal creature.  I did try to emphasize other kangaroolike qualities in this monster to distinguish it from a typical werewolf, including large, long feet and big ears.

Even the coloring is meant to accentuate the kangaroo aspect.  I was considering making this creature a bluish-gray color rather than the brown shown here.  You see, I had a dinosaur rival for this monster in mind, as well.  In many iterations of the Digimon cartoons I mentioned before, the main character pairs off with a red or orange monster that resembles a dinosaur, while his second-in-command often associates with a blue or white mammal of some kind, usually a wolf (for reference, Tai and Agumon on the left, Matt and Gabumon on the right).  Making Kangolf a grayish-blue and the dinosaur orange would have been a nod to that series.

While I did like Digimon as a kid, I decided against that idea for now, though it might be worth it to experiment with the colors.  When I think about kangaroos, I usually end up thinking about red kangaroos rather than gray ones, so I wanted to use the coloring here to promote the kangaroo part of this beast, as well.  Wolves can still be brown and make sense, too, right?

I will probably draw Kangolf again at some point for a better pose or something, but I should probably get cracking on this "dinosaur rival" I was talking about first.
