"Tamaki, the Shadow Soldier" is one of my favorite pictures I have uploaded here. She arose from a strange combination of a concept for formerly useless characters from Lucids, design elements from various role-playing video games I like, and an odd idea for her Lucid powers which arose from trying to make a background for her. I would like to do more with Tamaki in the future.
I mentioned back then Tamaki had sisters, and they would mostly be villains. In an attempt to follow up on Tamaki, I decided to draw the leader of this group of sisters: Rin.
As I mentioned before, the designs of this group of sisters would be somewhat based on Fire Emblem classes, their powers would be inspired by the Eeveelutions from the Pokemon series, and their colors came from the various flavored window options for Earthbound. I knew Rin would be based off the Pokemon Jolteon, the electric evolution of Eevee, so I sought a fantasy class which suited this magically strong and exceptionally fast Pokemon. A Mage / Sage was close and seemed definitive, but I ultimately decided on the Troubadour / Valkyrie class for Rin instead. This magic-wielding class starts off as supportive but will eventually learn how to cast offensive magic. A Valkyrie's magic assaults are not quite as powerful as those of a Sage, but they often act more quickly than Sages. Also, they can move great distances in a single turn due to the horses they ride.
Out of the Earthbound window "flavors" (Plain, Mint, Strawberry, Banana, and Peanut), I wanted to color Rin with "banana" colors in mind. Originally, that meant I wanted to dress her in yellow, but I adjusted it to a greenish-yellow in the end. Not only could this be reminiscent of a banana which is not ripe yet, it could stand out more from whichever sister received the peanut colors (orange and brown). The green tint also somewhat ties into my other lightning-blaster: Ken Thunder, while still standing on her own (Rin wears more chartreuse, while Ken leans closer to jade). The dark trim on her dress seems a little unsettling to me, but since Rin is an unsettling person, it should work.
Since I already have Ken as the "heroic" lightning Lucid, I required ways to set Rin, a more villainous Lucid, apart from him. Since Ken wears jade green and shoots yellow lightning, if Rin wore a shade of green which was more yellow, then her lightning might want to be a different color, too. Cyan seems like a more intense color while also seeming rather cold, which suits Rin well. Though she unleashes high-energy attacks with her lightning and her hammer, Rin supposedly feels nothing. She coldly carries out her missions and punishes targets and disobedient (or incompetent) subordinates alike. Did she choose to act this way, or did this way choose her. The wide but blank look in her eyes makes it hard to tell.
Oddly, Rin does not ride her horse as transportation; the horse - named Yakedoki - is a Nightmare Rin summoned specifically for one particular target, a girl with an unusual fear of horses. Yakedoki also holds an electric charge throughout his entire body, greater than whatever Rin can unleash on her own. She can even strike the horse with her hammer to send him charging through like a laser, and the horse can energize her to unleash electric blasts capable of evaporating a small pond (if she used her powers in the real world rather than the Dream Dimension). In general, the horse is meant to resemble a lightning bolt and electric crystals, hence the sharp points for hooves instead of actual hooves.
Out of the group of sisters, Rin is the one who has almost fully embraced her role, while Tamaki is the one who does her job until she can find an escape from that life. They and their other two sisters (one who commands fire, and the other water) seek out the youngest of their family, who has broken away to build her own life.
